SmartTrack and GO RER Integration

Current Status

On March 31, 2016, City Council directed the City Manager to complete the analysis for SmartTrack/GO Regional Express Rail (RER) integration options C and D, and remove from consideration the Separate and Parallel SmartTrack option, option A and option B as described below. The recommended SmartTrack concept will be reported to the City’s Executive Committee and the Metrolinx Board of Directors in June, 2016.

Opportunity Statement

  • GO RER is the expansion of GO service, transforming it to be faster and more frequent throughout the day. It is a funded program being delivered by Metrolinx
  • SmartTrack is an opportunity to integrate transit services within Toronto, enabling GO corridors to provide new transit capacity for trips to, from and within the City of Toronto
  • To this end, SmartTrack proposes to increase use of the Stouffville and Kitchener lines, with new stations and improved service frequency, and an integrated fare
  • As a result, integrated options for GO RER and SmartTrack have been developed


Options adding capacity to the GO corridors to continue to serve long-distance commuters, as well as meet more of the transportation needs for people wanting to travel to, from and within the City of Toronto
